The EV evolution has fast become a revolution, with global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) up to 6.3 million units (source: Bloomberg). Europe, China and the USA continue to dominate the league tables for the sale of electric cars, but other markets across the globe are demonstrating promising signs, to include, India.

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), also known as pure electric cars have come a long way since the introduction of the first-generation of the all-electric best-selling Nissan Leaf hatchback. The emergence of relatively new automotive brands, like the California based EV manufacturer, Tesla Inc., have redefined the landscape for the global automotive sector beyond recognition. The co-founder of Tesla Inc., Elon Musk has certainly been rewarded for his vision, innovation, perseverance and execution capability, making him the richest man in the world. According to Forbes, Elon Musk has a net-worth of over US$250 billion, significantly larger than the economies of a number of smaller countries.

But it is not only BEVs that have captured the imagination of automotive manufacturers and consumers, but also plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs), that are also ‘leading the charge’ for a lower-emission transportation framework. For those keen to understand the difference between the different type of electric vehicles (EVs), the table below is a good introduction!


Type Of Electric Vehicle (EV) Description
Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEVs)Mild hybrids use both an internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric motor. These cars are also known as ‘self-charging hybrids’. The vehicle uses regenerative braking (recuperated electric energy) to improve the fuel efficiency (mpg) and to reduce tailpipe emissions (CO2 g/km). However, mild hybrids cannot be charged by an external power source (i.e. EV charger). The recuperated electric energy is also used to boost the the combustion engine enhancing acceleration. Automotive manufactures (OEMs) like Toyota are one of the pioneers in developing and introducing mild hybrid vehicles. The ubiquitous Toyota Prius mild hybrid is an excellent example. Toyota also helped popularise the use of mild hybrids in the premium segment via its wholly owned Lexus brand.
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) aim to achieve the same objectives like a MHEV i.e. increase fuel efficiency and reduce tailpipe emissions. However there is much difference between a PHEV and a MHEV. The PHEV has a larger electric motor and onboard EV battery that is used to assist the internal combustion engine (ICE), but also to propel the vehicle. In a MHEV, the small onboard electric motor does not propel the vehicle. PHEVs come is varied EV battery sizes, but in general, most PHEVs have an EV battery size below 20 kWh. A plug-in electric car is capable of up to 25 miles zero-tailpipe emission electric miles. However, some PHEVs are capable of even longer electric miles. The Volvo XC60 PHEV is a good example of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Moreover, a PHEV EV battery is charged by using an external power source to include a domestic 3-PIN plug or a dedicated EV charger.
Battery-Electric Vehicle (BEV)A battery-electric vehicle is more commonly referred to as a pure electric car. The EVs are ‘pure’ in that, the vehicle only uses electric power for propulsion i.e. a BEV does not have an internal combustion engine. It is easy to recognise these zero-tailpipe emission green cars, as they are silent (except for the artificial noise) and do not have a tailpipe! The electric vehicles have a much larger onboard EV battery than a PHEV. The EV battery on a BEV can be as large as 120 kWh, though an average in 60 kWh. In any case, most BEVs have an EV battery larger than 30 kWh. BEVs also use regenerative braking to improve the vehicle efficiency and electric range. However, the main source for the EV range is the EV battery, which can only be charged using an external power source, like an EV charger. BEVs can vary in range, depending on a number factors. However the more recent BEVs can have a range between 100 miles to 300 miles (WLTP) on a single charge. As an example, the all-electric VW ID.3 has a range up to336 miles.

Despite the increased EV press coverage in India, the country remains a relatively nascent electric driving market, compared to more matured EV markets, like China and Europe. As of January 2022, the total number of pure electric cars and plug-in electric cars available in India are only fifteen, significantly lower than the European and US markets.

Moreover, the majority of the electric cars available in India are battery-electric vehicles and a very few plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. There are only two PHEVs available in India, the Volvo XC90 PHEV and the Porsche Cayenne PHEV. Hybrid electric cars continue to play an important role in the migration from internal combustion engine (ICE) cars to all-electric cars, in particular, for markets with limited EV charging infrastructure.

For the Indian EV market to develop i.e. convince consumers to move to lower-emission electric driving, the introduction of a larger portfolio of plug-in hybrid electric cars is imperative. It is also worth noting that the majority of the EVs currently available in India are positioned at the higher price segment. Electric cars like the Audi e-tron SUV and the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC are simply only for a very niche customer segment in India.

Again, for EV adoption to accelerate in India, the introduction of affordable electric cars is imperative. Tata Motors positioning of the all-electric Tata Tigor and the Tata Nexon SUV at more affordable retail prices, should also be adopted by other automotive manufacturers keen to participate in the Indian electric vehicle market.

A number of leading global automotive brands have announced their intention to launch in India, to include Tesla Inc. Of course, our very own Tata Motors should be recognised for its role in developing and promoting electric vehicles in India and abroad, via Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), based in the United Kingdom. Electric SUVs, like the Jaguar I-Pace have becoming hugely popular in western markets.

There is no doubt that the rapid adoption of either zero-tailpipe emission pure electric cars, or lower-emission plug-in hybrid electric cars will help improve air quality across all our cities and towns. It is true, in that, polluting internal combustion engine (ICE) petrol and diesel cars are not the only sources contributing to air pollution in India, but at an average, road transportation contributes to 30% to the worsening air quality.

If there was any positive from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, it is this: that for the first time in decades we can enjoy less polluted air across India. The NCR region, to include, Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida, witnessed historically low levels of air pollution, as a result of lower traffic congestion. Even parts of Punjab reported a significant improvement in air quality and visibility, giving the local residents a chance to see the Himalayas from their towns and villages. For many younger individuals, it would have been their first experience to enjoy these spectacular views!

However, to maintain lower levels of pollution we have to move rapidly away from petrol and diesel cars to electric cars. The sale of EVs in India, to date have largely been the sale electric two-wheeler and electric three-wheelers. Electric cars are a mere 5% of the total electric vehicles sold in India.

EV charging infrastructure has been a key driver for the successful adoption of electric cars in all markets. In general, even in matured EV markets, both, public EV charging and home EV charging infrastructure deployment is at relatively early stages. However, in India, public charging is at an extremely early stage. The development of a widespread public EV charging network, in particular, rapid EV charging will be key for the successful development of the EV market in India. The total number of EVs public charge points in India are currently a mere 1,208.

We hope the development of EV charging infrastructure in India gains significant momentum in the medium term, such that electric driving can become a reality for us Indians!

The Audi e-tron Electric SUV


The Audi e-tron SUV was unveiled as a concept car in 2015 (quattro concept), at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The e-tron battery-electric vehicle (BEV) is the first mass-market zero-emission pure electric vehicle from the German automotive manufacturer. The EV was delivered in 2019.

The e-tron SUV is a luxurious and spacious EV, perfect for families needing ample interior space and practicality without compromising on comfort! The rear seats are comfortable with excellent legroom and headroom. The electric vehicle (EV) is a smooth drive and well suited for weekend getaways and day trips with the family. The EV has a ‘familiar and conventional’ design, helpful for those consumers keen on ‘familiarity’ when migrating to zero-emission electric driving.

The e-tron SUV is available in two EV battery sizes: 71 kWh and 95 kWh, with WLTP ranges of 194 miles and 249 miles respectively. Though an 11kW on-board charger comes as standard, only the 55 quattro variant is capable of DC charging up to 150 kW. The 50 quattro variant can charge up to only 120 kW.

The All-Electric Audi RS e-tron GT Saloon

The All-Electric Audi e-tron Sportback Hatchback


The key difference between the e-SUV and the Audi e-tron Sportback e-hatchback is the sloping roof at the rear of the electric vehicle (EV). The length and width are the same between the two EVs, however, the e-tron Sportback has a slightly lower height. The All-Electric BMW iX SAV


The BMW iX electric vehicle (EV) is the first all-electric Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) from the German automotive company. The all-new BMW iX EV includes the fifth generation BMW eDrive Technology. The Hyundai New Kona Electric SUV


The pure electric Hyundai Kona Electric EV was launched in South Korea in 2018. The Kona has also been available as an internal combustion engine (ICE) variant since 2017. The vehicle is named after the western district of the island of Hawaii.

The Kona e-SUV is the second pure electric car from the South Korean manufacturer. The first was the all-electric IONIQ EV. The Jaguar I-PACE Electric SUV


The Jaguar I-PACE battery-electric vehicle (BEV) was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It is the first all-electric performance SUV from Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Deliveries commenced in the second half of 2018. The model has won a number of awards in 2019 to include, the European Car of the Year, World Car of the Year, the Best Design and Best Green Car awards. 

Though the Jaguar I-PACE was one of the first pure electric SUVs from a mainstream automotive manufacturer to challenge the dominance of Tesla electric cars, since 2018, many other car manufacturers have entered the zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) sector. Competition in the pure electric SUV segment is now fierce, with a number of EVs on offer at different price ranges.

The Jaguar compact electric SUV has a 90 kWh EV battery with a WLTP zero-emission electric range of 286 miles. Depending on driving style, weather conditions and the services used in the e-SUV, expect a real world range closer to 260 miles. However, that would be more than sufficient for most commutes, day and weekend trips. Depending on the cost of electricity, the cost per mile for driving on electric can be as low as 3 pence per mile. Bottom-line driving on electric miles is both cost efficient and eco-friendly!

The Jaguar BEV is practical and versatile without compromising on quality and comfort. The rear seats are comfortable for adults, with ample legroom and headroom and appropriate for most family requirements, to include, school runs, family outings, grocery shopping and a lot more! The interior quality of the pure electric SUV is high and driving is a pleasure.

The All-Electric Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV


The all-electric Mercedes EQC is the first member of the Mercedes EQ electric mobility family. The electric EQC is based on the Generation EQ concept which was unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, with the production model making its debut at the 2018 Paris Motor Show.  The EQC is based on the Mercedes-Benz GLC SUV model and is also a five-seater vehicle.

The MG ZS Electric SUV


The pure electric MG ZS EV was unveiled in 2016 at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The e-SUV was launched in 2017 in China. The MG ZS EV is a practical and affordable electric vehicle (EV), appropriate for families keen to migrate to zero-emission electric driving, but at prices that are affordable.

The Porsche Taycan Electric Saloon


The Porsche Taycan battery electric vehicle (BEV) was initially previewed as the Mission E concept car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015. Taycan (Turkish) translates as ‘lively young horse’ in reference to the ‘leaping horse’ in the Porsche crest (Porsche confirmed the name in 2017).

The Taycan prototype did make an appearance at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed (2019). Taycan has taken inspiration from both the Porsche Panamera and the Porsche 911.  The Taycan is built on an entirely new platform codenamed J1. Projected production of 40,000 units per year.

As one can expect, a Porsche never disappoints when it comes to performance. The Taycan EV is no different. Given the instant torque from a pure electric car, a Taycan can comfortably achieve 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds. But of course, luxury and performance from this famed marquee does not come cheap.

The electric vehicle (EV) is without an iota of doubt, stunning in design, style, quality and performance. But it has its limitations in terms of interior space, to include the limited headroom for rear seat passengers and small boot. Having said that, the pure electric Taycan is exhilarating to drive and perfect for consumers that want to own a Porsche, but with stronger environmental credentials!

The Porsche Cayenne E Plug-In Hybrid


The Porsche Cayenne luxury SUV has been available since 2002. It is the first Porsche vehicle with four doors. It is also Porsche’s first off-road since the tractors of the 1950’s. The Porsche Cayenne uses the same platform as the Volkswagen Touareg and the Audi Q7. The plug-in E-hybrid variant was introduced in 2014 at the Paris Motor Show.

As one can expect, a Porsche never disappoints when it comes to quality and performance. The Cayenne PHEV is no different. Given the instant torque from an electric engine, the plug-in electric vehicle achieves 0-62 mph in 5.0 seconds for the entry level variant. The top level variant, the Turbo S E Hybrid Coupe, achieves 0-62 mph in 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 183 mph. But of course, luxury and performance from this famed marquee does not come cheap.

The electric vehicle (EV) is without an iota of doubt, stunning in design, style, quality and performance. The plug-in electric vehicle (PHEV) is perfect for those drivers that want the performance and quality of a Porsche, but with better environmental credentials (tailpipe emissions: up to 92g/km). Though the PHEV has a zero-emission electric range up to 27 miles, based on driving style and driving conditions, the real world range could be closer to 22 miles.

The All-Electric Tata Tigor EV


The Tata Tigor, internal combustion engine (ICE) passenger car was launched in 2017 and originated from the Tata Tiago hatchback. Though the Tata Tigor EV was initially launched in 2018, for use by the Government of India (GoI), the four-door pure electric Tata Tigor sedan was launched for the private market in October 2019.  

Since its launch, the electric vehicle has performed well, with recent reports suggesting it to be the best successful passenger electric vehicle.  The EV is also being acquired by fleet customers (commercial customers). The Tata Tigor EV is very similar in appearance to the petrol Tata Tigor, except for minimal changes. In September 2021 the pure electric car received a facelift.   

The Tigor EV has a 26 kWh high energy density lithium-ion battery, with an emission-free range of 306 km on a single charge (ARAI certified range under standard conditions). Of course, the real world EV range will be lower depending on a number of conditions to include: driving conditions, road surface, driving style, driving mode, service used onboard etc. In general, the Tigor EV battery is smaller in size compared to electric cars manufactured by leading global automotive companies.

Saloon pure electric cars can range from 35 kWh to 100 kWh in terms of EV battery size. Interstingly, even the Tata Nexon SUV EV has a larger EV battery (30.2 kWh) compared to the Tigor EV. Given the general concern around range anxiety, EVs with a larger EV battery i.e. longer zero-emission range will be winners! Let’s hope that Tata Motors recognises this trend and introduces the Tigor EV with a larger EV battery!

The Tigor EV is priced for affordability and is without doubt one of the better priced pure electric cars not only in India, but also internationally. The EV is available in four variants (XE, XM, XZ+, XZ+ DT) with prices starting from Rs 11.99 L (ex-showroom). The EV price has increased as part of the facelift, but still remains affordable.    

The EV is capable of fast charging (CCS2) and can be charged from 0% to 80% in 65 minutes. For home charging the EV can be charged via a 15 Amp plug point (0% to 80% in 8 hours and 45 minutes). In any case most EV are charged at home, overnight!

The EV has been built on the Ziptron EV platform and offers two driving modes: Drive & Sport. In the Sport mode, the EV is able to further enhance the instant torque. The EV achieves 0-60 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds. Top speed is capped at 80 kmh. The EV is equipped with regenerative braking (increases EV range), hill ascent assist and hill descent assist.

Tata Motors offers free home charge point installation, 24X7 emergency charging support (5 cities) and its wider national service network. The EV battery has an 8 years/ 160,000 km warranty.

The EV is equipped with a host of technology to include: 8.89 cm connectNext infotainment system by Harman, 17.78 cm connectNext floating dash-top touchscreen infotainment by Harman, FM, USB, I-pod connectivity, bluetooth connectivity, audio Streaming and Apple Car Play & Android Auto. The EV also uses the Tata ZConnect mobile app, which is capable of 35 smart connected features to include: intrusion alert, stolen vehicle tracking, panic notification, remote immobilization etc, remote door lock/unlock, remote cooling, remote vehicle diagnostics, and remote lights ON/OFF. The EV is available in two colours: Daytona Grey & Signature Teal Blue.

The All-Electric Tata Nexon EV SUV


The Nexon EV prototype was unveiled in 2014 at the New Delhi Motor Show, with the production model making its debut in 2016.  The all-electric Nexon was unveiled in December 2019 by Mr. Guenter Butschek, CEO & MD Tata Motors Ltd.  He said at the unveiling “After introducing our cutting-edge EV technology, Ziptron, we are thrilled to unveil the first EV featuring this technology – the Nexon EV. This is a high performance, connected vehicle that is uniquely suited to address the aspirations of Indian customers and break all barriers of EV adoption.”

The pure electric Nexon EV (powered by Ziptron) is available only in one EV battery size: 30.2 kWh. The company claims a range up to 312 kms on a full charge, but of course, as is the case with most EVs, the real word range is lower than the manufacturer quoted range due to driving style, driving conditions, weather, on-board services used etc. The Nexon EV has two driving modes ‘Drive Mode’ and ‘Sport Mode’. The latter gives an additional 60% torque. Of course, using the Sport Range further reduces the zero-emission range of the EV.

The interior is packed with features like: automatic climate control, rear AC vent and cooled glove box. The EV has the ZCONNECT app, which has up to 35 features. Key features include: remote commands, vehicle health monitoring, safety & security, driving & trip analytics, and location based services. The EV is equipped with a 17.78 cm Harman infotainment touchscreen. The EV is also capable of over the air updates.

The EV has a 3.3 kW AC on-board charger, which does restrict the charging speed. Most new EVs have a 7 kW on-board charger, with 11 kW fast becoming commonplace. The Nexon electric SUV is capable of fast charging and can be charged 0% to 80% in 60 minutes. Using a 15 AMP plug point, the EV will charge 10% to 90% in 8.5 hours. As is expected in an EV, the Nexon also features regenerative braking, which does help increase the electric range.

The EV can be purchased outright or can be acquired via the Tata subscription service. The EV subscription service commences from Rs 33,300 per month. The company also offers the largest EV service network in India, 24×7 breakdown assistance and doorstep service.

The company is expected to launch a new variant of the Nexon EV in 2022 with a larger EV battery (40 kWh) and a range up to 400 km. The Nexon EV has tough competition from other pure electric SUVs like the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona electric SUV.

The Volvo XC90 Recharge Plug-In Hybrid SUV


The Volvo XC90 internal combustion engine (ICE) SUV has been available since 2002 and is currently in the second generation. The first generation was unveiled at the 2002 North American International’s Auto Show. The XC90 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been available since 2015. The e-SUV was given a facelift in early 2021.

The plug-in electric Volvo SUV (PHEV) is perfect for families already familiar with the advantages of owning and driving a Volvo car i.e. a fantastic reputation for safety and quality. Of course, the electric Recharge PHEV further enhances this enviable reputation, given the environment-friendly nature of lower emission plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

The Volvo plug-in electric SUV has a 11.6 kWh EV battery with a WLTP zero-emission electric range of 30 miles. Depending on driving style, weather condition and the services used in the e-SUV, expect a real world range closer to 25 miles. However, that would be more than sufficient for most daily commutes using the EV battery i.e. driving emission-free and also saving money (the running cost per mile of an EV is far lower than a petrol or diesel car). Bottom-line driving on electric miles is both cost efficient and eco-friendly!

The Volvo PHEV is practical and versatile without compromising on quality and comfort. The rear seats are comfortable for adults, with ample legroom and headroom and appropriate for most family requirements, to include, school runs, family outings, grocery shopping and a lot more! The interior quality of the electric SUV is high and driving is a pleasure.
