Longest Range Electric SUVs 2021: The Complete Guide For India

Audi e-tron electric Q4 India

Overview

Battery-electric SUVs have come a long way over the past few years. In the recent spate of introductions of new pure electric SUVs by mainstream automotive manufacturers, one theme is dominant. EV battery capacity (size) and the emission-free electric range keeps increasing!

One of the earlier challenges for the mainstream adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), has been the perceived risk of running out of battery charge ‘fuel’, more commonly referred to as range anxiety. Though a credible concern a decade ago, this stumbling block has been overcome fiercely by automotive manufacturers (OEMs) and companies providing electric vehicle charging infrastructure. This success is not restricted to only the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) body style, but across all other vehicle segments, to include, all-electric hatchbacks, all-electric estate cars and all-electric saloons.

The newest eco-friendly BEVs on the market average between 100 miles to 375 zero-emission electric miles on a fully-charged EV battery. However, the pure electric SUVs on our list all travel over 300 emission-free miles on a fully charged EV battery. Now, that is impressive!

Certainly for those travelling for work on a daily basis, whether in Mumbai or Delhi, or any other city in India will never need to worry about range anxiety with the e-suv’s on the list below. Moreover, these electric vehicles (EVs) are also suitable for long-distance trips i.e. for a weekend away or to meet family members. As an example, a trip between Delhi and Jaipur (175 miles) will be easily achievable with these electric SUV’s!

The list of all-electric SUVs below, combines with ease, style, performance, driving comfort, practicality, electric range and zero-tailpipe emissions. No wonder, these e-SUVs are fast becoming popular with families of all sizes and needs across many international markets!

The Ford Mustang Mach-E Electric SUV

The all-electric Ford Mustang SUV was launched to much pomp and show in LA in November 2019.  Determined to show its confidence, Ford chose an aircraft hangar close to the operations of SpaceX for the launch. SpaceX is another undertaking by the Tesla co-founder Elon Musk.

This is the first non-sports car to use the Mustang marque. The name has been inspired from the Mach 1 variant of the first-generation Mustang. The all-electric SUV Mach-e went on sale in December 2020 and has already won the prestigious North American SUV of the Year Award. The Mach-e is manufactured at the Ford plant in Mexico but is also expected to be manufactured in China. The pure electric five-door Ford SUV is built on a brand-new EV architecture (Global Electrified 1: GE 1).

Ford is hoping to build success on the legacy of the Mustang internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle. Early indications suggest that the all-electric Mustang SUV is well positioned to succeed. Though the price is higher than other cheaper electric SUV’s, the build quality, specifications, interior space and electric performance of the Mach-e SUV does make it a good choice for consumers seeking to migrate to zero-emission electric driving.

The SUV EV is available in two battery options: 98.7 kWh (Extended Range) and 75.7 kWh (Standard Range). The Extended Range (ER) can add up to 73 miles every 10 minutes (150 kW DC charging) and can be charged 10-80% in 45 minutes.

The Skoda ENYAQ iV Electric SUV

The SKODA ENYAQ iV SUV is Skoda’s first pure electric SUV and second battery-electric vehicle (BEV). The EV uses the Volkswagen Group’s MEB EV platform (the Volkswagen all-electric ID.3 uses the same platform). The nameplate has been derived from the Irish name ‘Enya’, which means ‘source of life’. The ‘E’ refers to electromobility and the ‘Q’ characterising the final letters of SKODA’s SUV family.

The Skoda ENYAQ is an affordable pure electric SUV, well suited for families keen to migrate to zero-tailpipe emission electric driving, seeking affordability and practicality. The e-SUV has been awarded the maximum five stars by WhatCar? and the reviewer describes the EV as “practical, good to drive, smart inside and well-equipped”.

The Tesla Model X Electric SUV

The Model X prototype was unveiled in 2012.  The mid-sized all-electric SUV with its Falcon wing doors has certainly contributed to Tesla’s cache.  The Model X was designed from the Model S platform and still retains much in common with the Model S.  The Model X deliveries commenced in late 2015.

Like other Tesla electric cars, the Model X has also claimed its fair share of awards.  In 2017, Forbes named the zero tailpipe emission SUV the ‘Best Vehicle of the Year’.  In the same year the Model X was also awarded the ‘Top Green Vehicle’ by the American Automobile Association. The Model X SUV also holds the unique distinction of achieving a Guinness World Record for the ‘heaviest tow by an electric production passenger vehicle’. In 2018, the zero-emission electric vehicle (EV) towed a Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

As of 2021, the pure electric SUV is available in only two trims, the Long Range and the Plaid model.

The Tesla Model Y Electric Car

The Model Y is a Tesla Model 3 based crossover with inspiration also taken from the Tesla Model X SUV.  However the Model Y does not have the iconic ‘falcon wing doors’ used in the Model X. The Model Y has been developed to further increase the ‘mass market appeal’ of Tesla pure electric cars.  A strategy very similar to the successful Tesla Model 3.  However, unlike the Model 3, the Model Y has room for up to seven adults with an optional third row.  The extra seats are an additional cost.

The battery electric vehicle (BEV) is packed with technology, to include, 12 sensors to detect nearby vehicles, a 160 m forward facing radar for a long-range view of distant objects and 360 degrees cameras to provide maximum visibility. The Model Y has ‘Full Self-Driving’ capability (option priced at US$ 10,000 in the US and EUR 7,500 in Italy).  The Model Y will compete head-on with the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV and also with the award winning Jaguar I-PACE electric SUV

Tesla commenced Model Y deliveries for the US market in early 2020 (6 months ahead of schedule). There are currently two trim options, but a third option is expected in due course.

The VW ID.4 Electric SUV

The series production of the all-electric VW ID.4  commenced in August 2020 at the company’s factory in Zwickau (Germany). The ID.3 VW hatchback electric car is also manufactured at the same location. The pure electric ID.4 is a compact crossover, well suited for families, seeking practicality and ample interior space. The ID.4 EV is a good all-rounder and a decent option for those seeking to migrate to zero-emission electric driving.

The all-electric ID.4 SUV will be manufactured in the US in 2022 and is also expected to be manufactured in China. According to Thomas Ulbrich, a Volkswagen board member, “Given the major societal challenges of recent months, the successful start of ID.4 series production is an exception achievement.” The ID.4 is the second electric vehicle (EV) to use the bespoke MEB platform, after the all-electric ID.3.

The pure electric SUV can be charged at home via a dedicated home EV charging station. Those with a 3-phase supply can take advantage of the 11kW on-board charger. The VW ID.4 EV is capable of rapid charging (125 kW) at public electric car charging points (199 electric miles in just 30 minutes).
